Annotation:

Francis Hopkinson Smith was an American engineer, writer and artist who laid the foundation of the Statue of Liberty, wrote many famous short stories, many of which contain highly regarded images of the Old South, and received awards for his paintings. The action in the novel "Peter" takes place in New York, Peter Grayson is an aging banker of the old school; a decent and cultured gentleman, not prone to speculation. Peter also has an impact on the younger generation around him, including a young man who comes to New York to work in the financial world. The work examines the growing materialism and changing attitudes of people at the turn of the 20th century and assumes that the affection and support of family elders play a key role in the lives of young people.
