The basic concepts that the reader will encounter in this book are the concepts of a real number, a function, a continuous function, a derivative and an integral. Within the limits of this book, the introduction of the Stieltyes and Lebesgue integrals, no matter how naturally they adjoin the old concept of the Riemann integral, may seem to the reader to pursue purely logical goals of constructing a natural and sometimes even simplifying generalization of classical concepts. In fact, the recent development of many branches of mathematics, such as the calculus of probabilities, the theory of integral equations or calculus of variations, would be very difficult if these new concepts of the integral did not come to the rescue. To the reader who has mastered the elementary course of analysis and intends to begin further study of the theory of functions of a real variable, refer to this book.
