Annotation:

The book was compiled by R. Dedekind based on Dirichlet's lectures delivered in 1856-1857. The book contains the main results of the theory of quadratic forms, outlined by Gauss in his famous essay "Studies in Arithmetic", and provides a systematic summary of Dirichlet's own research. These studies serve as the basis for the theory of numbers at that time and belong to the most profound results of mathematics of the XIX century. Since Lejeune Dirichlet's book provides a purely arithmetical exposition of the theory of quadratic forms, an article by professor B.N. Delaunay "Geometry of binary quadratic forms" is added at the end of the book.
