Annotation:

This book is an extensive monograph published in the series "Proceedings of the Commission on the History of the USSR Academy of Sciences", published under the general editorship of S. I. Vavilov. It consists of three parts. The first part contains copies of 622 documents related to Lobachevsky's life and work. The originals of these documents are mostly kept in the archives of Kazan University and the trustee of the Kazan Educational District; some are in other archival institutions. This part also contains Lobachevsky's extant correspondence and some other materials. The documents are collected with great skill and are provided with carefully written instructions about the location of each of them and the place of first publication. The second part of the book consists of the memoirs of Lobachevsky's children, former students of Kazan University, his comrades and individuals who knew him. With a few exceptions, these memoirs have already been previously published; here they are put together and complement the documentary materials well. The third part consists of an extensive dictionary-index of all persons mentioned in the text of the book and having some kind of relation to Lobachevsky. Each name is accompanied by brief information about the relevant person and his attitude to the life and work of Lobachevsky. Many aspects of the life and work of the great scientist received a new light in it.
