Gustave Flaubert's phenomenal historical novel Salambo is one of the remarkable achievements of Western European literature of the 19th century. The task set by Flaubert was to provide historical documentary material embodied in artistic images. The work deals with the ancient city of Carthage, its conflicts and everyday realities. The novel takes place during the uprising of troops in the III century BC, when disgruntled mercenaries, angered by the delay in salaries, decide to take over the city. The reader gradually discovers the complex interweaving of political forces with difficult social processes, an entire cultural epoch is passing with all its riot of colors and feelings, its own customs and customs. In the very basis of his work, the author laid the story of the passion of the daughter of the Carthaginian commander Hamilcar Salambo and the Libyan leader of the rebellious troops Mato. Their feelings are forbidden, and love is impossible, which leads to irreparable events in the life of the Carthaginians.
