Encyclopedias include information on history, science, literature, art, geography, technology and other fields. They are intended for general reference and provide concise and understandable information on various topics.
The Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary is the largest and most authoritative pre—revolutionary universal encyclopedia in Russian, published in the Russian Empire by the F. A. Brockhaus — I.A. Efron joint-stock Publishing Company (St. Petersburg), started under the editorship of I.E. Andreevsky and continues under the editorship of K.K.Arsenyev and F.F.Petrushevsky.
It consists of 86 volumes (82 main and 4 additional), published during 1890-1907.
Its main advantages are the high saturation of factual and statistical material, the high scientific level of articles, objectivity associated with the desire to avoid bias and one-sidedness in the presentation of the material, the absence of an ideologized approach characteristic of encyclopedias of the Soviet era, an accessible form of presentation of the material.
Nowadays, the dictionary's materials are in the public domain; although the encyclopedia is already very outdated in scientific and technical terms and in covering many humanitarian issues, many of its articles still represent exceptional informational, historical and cultural value.
The total number of articles is more than 121,000;
The number of personal articles is more than 40,000;
The number of illustrations is 7800;
The number of cards is more than 235.
