Selected specimens of the national literature of England from G.Chaucer before 1855 with biographical and critical scetches by L.Herrig.
The aim of the author was to give a historical overview
of the totality of English literature, composed of works carefully selected and arranged in chronological order.
The book consists of biographies and works of dramatists, novelists, poets, philosophers, historians, writers, romanists, essayists and parliamentary speakers, and is also divided into 5 periods, which are called:
- From Chaucer till the year 1558;
- The Elizabethan era;
- The age of transition;
- From the reign of queen Anne till the year 1780;
- Modern literature from 1780 till the year 1855.
