The plot tells the story of the journey of Nell Trent and her grandfather, residents of an old antiques store in London, whose lives plunged into chaos and poverty due to the machinations of an evil loan shark. Little Nell is a fictional character, the main character of the novel, she is depicted as impeccably beautiful, kind and virginal. An orphan, she lives with her maternal grandfather in his sundries store. Trying to provide for her, grandpa plays cards a lot and borrows a lot of money from the villain Daniel Quilp, who longs for Little Nell and hopes to eventually marry her after getting rid of his wife. In the end, Quilp takes over the store and evicts Nell and her grandfather, who are traveling to the Midlands to live as beggars. Little Nell takes her grandfather on a journey to save them from suffering, but throughout the journey she gradually becomes weaker, and although she finds a home with the help of a school teacher, she falls ill and dies before her friends in London find her.
