Annotation:

The book is a novel, and throughout its narrative a love story unfolds, characterized by a sympathetic attitude and an ever-growing interest; but the main role is played by an old banker from the country, David Harum: dry, eccentric, no doubt a little illiterate, but possessing an amazing amount of knowledge. This rural horse-trading banker and famous Shylock, but a true philanthropist, is an exact representative of the type of people who exist in rural areas of central New York today. Its varieties can be seen daily, driving around in their traveling vans or sitting in their "banking parlors," astute, sharp-tongued, honest as sunlight from most points of view, but in horse trading inclined to follow the rule set by Mr. J. Harum himself. The good-natured humor and sunny atmosphere that permeate these pages stand in stark contrast to the circumstances under which they were written. The main attraction of this work was the businessmen, who were attracted by the approval of a much more lenient code of business ethics than that presented in most novels of the time.
