Edith Wharton is an American writer and designer, novelist, short story writer, poet, and Pulitzer Prize winner. Her works show the lives of people at the end of the nineteenth century, during the decline of American history. The novel "Madame de Tremes" is a fascinating portrait of American and French culture at the beginning of the century. The author tells the story of two young innocent people abroad: Fanny Frisby from New York, unhappily married to the dissolute Marquis de Malrives, and his friend John Durham, who intends to convince Fanny to divorce her husband and marry him. After leaving New York to live in Paris with her husband's family, she embarks on an adventure in Paris with her childhood friend John Durham. Through Fanny's crisis between her rights as a woman and what is best for her family, Edith Wharton explores the clash of cultures of Parisian and American life and the role of women at the turn of the century in this touching novel about love and scandal for an American woman abroad.
